Just a jaw-dropping letter, this “J”. Whether a jester or a joker, a jape or a jocus, there is a lot of joy to be found in this tenth letter of the English alphabet.

To those of you who might be wondering when this letter first came about, the formal answer would be in the 1500s, when Gian Giorgio Trissino, an Italian Renaissance diplomat, distinguished “I” and “J” as having different sounds. Before this, the letter “J” was merely used as a swash letter I for when Roman numerals would have three consecutive I’s. So for instance, the number 23 would be written as XXIIJ instead of XXIII as we write it now.

Before Trissino came into the picture, the letters I and J were different shapes for the same letter – so the letter J came about from variances in handwriting. However, as the Romance languages started to develop new sounds, the letter “J” came to represent sounds like /i/ and soft /g/.
