The music industry is ablaze with so many love songs – whether it’s a new love, a long-lasting love, or a lost love. But you don’t always get to see songs that celebrate the love you have for a friend.

The only bad thing about friendship songs is that there aren’t enough of them. For the most part, this is because it’s easier to market a love song because of all the complicated scenarios you can mention and all the nuances of love (whether its presence or lack thereof). With friendship songs, it’s mostly just happiness there, and therefore it’s not as hard-hitting.

However, we did try our best to find some of the most awesome friendship songs out there. So whether you just want to appreciate your friends or you just want a happy song to listen to, give this playlist a shot.

Four Year Strong – Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die

Let’s start off with an upbeat punk-rock song from a band whose friendship is so epic they just had to make songs about it. This legendary song about feeling like a legend whenever you’re with your friends is one of those catchy tunes that you just want to play over and over again. Its lyrical genius makes it one of the best friendship songs ever written.

Friendship lyrics: Sad enough to say that alone I could barely light a match

But together we can burn this place down

Sorry about the mess, but when we team up, team up

We always seem to bring this place to the ground

Randy Newman – You’ve Got a Friend in Me

We all know this song from Toy Story, and it’s possibly one of the cutest friendship songs out there. It’s about being a great friend to someone. And while you might not be the strongest or the brightest of the bunch, your friendship is a priceless gift that nothing can replace.

Friendship lyrics: Some folks might be a little bit smarter than I am

Bigger and stronger too, maybe

But none of them will ever love you the way that I do, boy

And as the years go by our friendship will never die

You’re gonna see it’s our destiny

You’ve got a friend in me

James Taylor – You’ve Got a Friend

The greatest test of friendship is always the hard times. There might be people out there who are there for you when you’re at your peak, and then leave you when times are tough. Those aren’t good friends; they’re fair weather friends. But if you’re the type of friend who’s still there for someone when the going gets tough, then you can confidently say that you’re a true friend.

Friendship lyrics: You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am

I’ll come running to see you again

Winter, spring, summer, or fall

All you have to do is call

And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah

You’ve got a friend

The Beatles – With a Little Help from My Friends

The world instantly becomes a much better place when you have friends who are there for you. This friendship anthem from The Beatles might just be a great choice to sing when you want to celebrate your friendship with someone. This song about being able to do what you want and being happy doing it because you have friends who are willing to always back you up.

Friendship lyrics: What would you think if I sang out of tune

Would you stand up and walk out on me?

Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song

And I’ll try not to sing out of key

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

Bill Withers – Lean On Me

Don’t we all need someone to lean on from time to time? This Bill Withers hit was inspired by his homesickness when he moved from West Virginia to Los Angeles. He missed his community back in his hometown, and this was made worse when he lived in a poorer section of town. It was during this time when he figured that it would be great if there was someone he could lean on while he was lonely.

Friendship lyrics: You just call on me brother, when you need a hand

We all need somebody to lean on

I just might have a problem that you’ll understand

We all need somebody to lean on

Dionne and Friends – That’s What Friends Are For

This friendship song was originally recorded by Rod Stewart back in 1982 for the film Night Shift. However, it became popular when it was covered by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder. This beautiful song about finding hope through your friends was released as a charity single towards AIDS research and prevention.

Friendship lyrics: Keep smilin’, keep shinin’

Knowing you can always count on me, for sure

That’s what friends are for

For good times and bad times

I’ll be on your side forever more

That’s what friends are for

Andrew Gold – Thank You for Being a Friend

How often do we get to say thank you to our friends for simply being there for us? If you haven’t done that lately, then you might want to get your friends to listen to this song. You might find it familiar because it was used as the theme song for The Golden Girls. But whether you were a fan of the show or not, you have to admit that this is a great catchy tune to sing to your friends!

Friendship lyrics: And when we both get older

With walking canes and hair of gray

Have no feat even though it’s hard to hear

I will stand real close and say

Thank you for being a friend

Ben E. King – Stand By Me

A song so good that it was released twice – first in 1961 and again in 1986. It was even covered by other famous celebrities like John Lennon, Muhammad Ali, Incubus, and even Timon and Pumbaa from The Lion King. Stand By Me is a timeless hit that can be interpreted as both a romantic song and a song for a friend. It’s about feeling better when you know that you friend is always there to stand by you through everything you do.

Friendship lyrics: If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall

Or the mountains should crumble to the sea

I won’t cry, I won’t cry, no, I won’t shed a tear

Just as long as you stand by me

The Beatles – In My Life

This song was inspired by John Lennon’s memories from his childhood. Upon seeing that it wasn’t lyrically interesting, he decided to replace some lines with more generalized meditations on his past. According to Lennon, In My Life is his first real major piece of work because it was the first time he wrote a song about his own life. And it truly is a wonderful song about remembering the past and the friends we’ve made and lost along the way.

Friendship lyrics: All these places have their meanings

With lovers and friends I still can recall

Some are dead and some are living

In my life, I’ve loved them all

Rihanna – Umbrella

We can’t miss one of the songs that made Rihanna a household name! Umbrella is a song about staying friends with someone through the good times and bad times. And even though you might be worlds apart (as Rihanna might be with friends from her hometown), she’ll never let those fancy things come between her and the people who shaped her into who she is.

Friendship lyrics: These fancy things will never come in between

You’re party of my entity, here for infinity

Jason Mraz feat. Colbie Caillat – Lucky

This is a triple whammy of a song that talks about friendship, a relationship, and a long distance love. Some of us can only hope we’re lucky enough to fall in love with our best friend. It’s like the perfect relationship where you know each other so well. And even if you’re miles apart, it’s that strong foundation of love and friendship that keeps you together.

Friendship lyrics: Lucky I’m in love with my best friend

Lucky to have been where I have been

Lucky to be coming home again

I’m lucky we’re in love in every way

Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed

Lucky to be coming home someday

Christina Aguilera – I Turn to You

Would you believe that this song was originally recorded by R&B quartet All-4-One for the Space Jam soundtrack? And while it didn’t become popular, Christina Aguilera covered it and made it a huge hit. While Christina states that the song reminds her of her relationship with her mother, it can also be interpreted as a song for a friend who’s always there for you.

Friendship lyrics: For a shield from the storm, for a friend

For a love to keep me safe and warm, I turn to you

For the strength to be strong, for the will to carry on

For everything you do, for everything that’s true

I turn to you

Dido – Thank You

Have you ever had one of those days when nothing seems to be going right? And then all of a sudden, a friend calls you up and suddenly, things aren’t so bad anymore? This thank you song for a friend is a great one to dedicate to that one friend who always manages to cheer you up by just being there when you’re having an awful day.

Friendship lyrics: I drank too much last night, got bills to pay

My head just feels in pain

I missed the bus and there’ll be hell today

I’m late for work again

And even if I’m there they’ll all imply

That I might not last the day

And then you call me, and it’s not so bad, it’s not so bad

Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings

If you haven’t seen the movie Beaches, we suggest you go set a date with your best friend and watch it together. Wind Beneath My Wings is the theme song of that movie, and we’re absolutely sure you and your friend will be bawling your eyes out when you hear it being sung. This song is a classic friendship song that is sure to stay at the top of friendship song lists for decades to come.

Friendship lyrics: Did you ever know that you’re my hero?

You’re everything I wish I could be

I could fly higher than an eagle

For you are the wind beneath my wings

The Rembrandts – I’ll Be There For You

And now for the ultimate friendship song! It’s none other than the theme song for the ultimate sitcom about friendship – Friends. The song was actually written by the producers of Friends, which makes it a very fitting song to cap off our list. It’s such a happy, upbeat song about friends who don’t leave each other behind no matter their lot in life.

Friendship lyrics: No one could ever know me, no one could ever see me

Seems you’re the only one who knows what it’s like to be me

Someone to face the day with, make it through all the rest with

Someone I’ll always laugh with

Even at my worst, I’m best with you, yeah
