What drives you crazy? Is it love? Is it heartbreak? Perhaps it’s just the world and your own mind that are driving you crazy?
There are a ton of reasons to go figuratively crazy, as you can see from this playlist of songs about going off your rocker!
Patsy Cline – Crazy
We’re starting off this list with a song that a lot of us can relate to. No, we’re not insinuating that we’re all a little crazy, but that is how we tend to feel when we’re heartbroken. In this song, Patsy Cline sings about how she’s crazy for thinking that her love can hold her man. Sadly, her man has left her for someone new, and she’s driving herself mad with loneliness.
Crazy lyrics: Crazy, I’m crazy for feeling so lonely
I’m crazy, crazy for feeling so blue
I knew you’d love me as long as you wanted
And then someday, you’d leave me for somebody new
Natalie Cole – Miss You Like Crazy
Natalie Cole excelled at capturing the feeling of hope when you miss someone you love intensely. In this song, she tells an ex-lover how much she misses him like crazy and how good the used to be together. She uses this song as an opportunity to tell him of the good times that they had, and that maybe there’s still hope for them.
Crazy lyrics: I miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy
Ever since you went away, every hour of every day
I miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy
No matter what I say or do
There’s just no getting over you
Aerosmith – Crazy
Here’s a slightly more modern take on going crazy from heartbreak. Crazy is a song about a guy who misses the girl who just packed up and decided to leave him for a career in Hollywood. He taunts her before she leaves by telling her that she’s always saying the same old thing, but they eventually make up right after. But in this case, it’s both her decision to leave and his feelings that it might be for good that’s driving him up the wall.
Crazy lyrics: I go crazy, crazy, crazy I go crazy
You turn it on and you’re gone
Yeah you drive me crazy, crazy, crazy for you baby
What can I do honey
I feel like the color blue
N’Sync – Drive Myself Crazy
90s boyband N’Sync were not to be left behind when it comes to songs about being crazy in love. Drive Myself Crazy is a pretty self-explanatory song about a guy who misses his girl like crazy. He looks back on the good times they shared together and how much he regrets ever letting her go. He admits that he wasn’t completely sure about his feelings, and thus wasn’t able to make her feel how much he loved her. And that’s what ultimately drove them apart. Bonus points in here for the music video, which depicts the boys going insane inside an asylum.
Crazy lyrics: I lie awake
I drive myself crazy
Drive myself crazy
Thinking of you
Made a mistake
When I let you go baby
I drive myself crazy
Wanting you the way that I do
Queen – Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Now we move on to the other side of crazy – being crazy in love with someone. While a lot of people may kind of assume that it’s a song by Elvis, it was actually written by Freddie Mercury as a tribute to the King of Rock and Roll. And if you check out the official music video for the song, you can see just how much Freddie idolized Elvis and his style.
Crazy lyrics: I gotta be cool relax, get hip
Get on my tracks
Take a back seat, hitch-hike
And take a long ride on my motor bike
Until I’m ready
Crazy little thing called love
Madonna – Crazy for You
The setting of Crazy for You is a crowded bar where the protagonist sees the man she’s deeply attracted to. She slowly makes a move and walks towards him, knowing that there’s a spark between them that turns into a kiss. For those of you who didn’t know, the songwriters of Crazy for You expressed their doubt about Madonna’s ability to sing this song. But lo and behold, it shot Madonna to fame and got her her first Grammy nomination!
Crazy lyrics: I’m crazy for you
Touch me once and you’ll know it’s true
I never wanted anyone like this
It’s all brand new, you’ll feel it in my kiss
I’m crazy for you, crazy for you
Britney Spears – (You Drive Me) Crazy
Pop Princess Britney Spears gives a 90s bubblegum pop vibe to the feeling of going crazy when you’re in love with someone. In this song, she pines for a guy she’s in love with, though he seems oblivious to her feelings. So while unlike Madonna who mustered up the guts to confront the guy she likes, Britney just obsessively thinks about the guy to the point of losing sleep!
Crazy lyrics: You drive me crazy
I just can’t sleep
I’m so excited, I’m in too deep
But it feels alright
Baby, thinkin’ of you keeps me up all night
Evan and Jaron – Crazy for This Girl
Possibly one of the most nostalgic songs from the early 2000s is this song from Evan and Jaron. In this song, the protagonist starts off admiring a girl from afar. In time, they become closer and he realizes how much he’s in love with her. The song culminates in him finally telling her that he’s ready to spend the rest of his life with her. It’s such a sweet, straightforward song about falling in love without the pretensions and complications present in most of today’s songs.
Crazy lyrics: Would you look at her
She looks at me
She’s got me thinking about her constantly
But she don’t know how I feel
And as she carries on without a doubt
I wonder if she’s figured it out
I’m crazy for this girl
Beyonce feat. Jay Z – Crazy in Love
Beyonce’s first foray into being a solo artist was kick-started with this song. Crazy in Love was written from the perspective of a girl who realizes she’s in love. She’s starting to branch out and do stuff she doesn’t normally do – and she’s doing it all in the name of love. Jay Z was a last-minute addition to this song, and his immediate agreement to collaborate with Beyonce may be explained by the fact that the two were dating when the song was being recorded.
Crazy lyrics: Got me hoping you’ll page me right now, your kiss
Got me hoping you’ll save me right now
Looking so crazy in love’s got me looking
Got me looking so crazy in love
The Black Keys – Psychotic Girl
With so many artists going crazy in love, here’s a duo that admits to trying to steer clear of crazy. Psychotic Girl is about a protagonist who knows a woman’s crazy ways all too well, so he decides that he wants no part of it. He’s dabbled in a relationship with her in the past, and while he had initially thought she changed her ways, it turns out that she’s still as insane as she used to be.
Crazy lyrics: I heard you threw your man around
Pick him up just to let him down
It’s a shame, baby, but I always knew
Just the way you’re gonna do, oh
Oh no, just a psychotic girl
And I won’t get lost in your world
Green Day – Basket Case
Let’s take a step back from all the lovestruck folks out there and tackle a song about genuine mental illness. Basket Case is a song about Billie Joe Armstrong’s panic disorder. As a kid, he would often wake up in the middle of the night due to a panic attack, and he’d walk around the neighborhood to calm down. He says that writing this song was one of the only ways he knew how to deal with his disorder.
Crazy lyrics: Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I’m cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Or am I just stoned
Pixies – Where Is My Mind
The lyrics are admittedly cryptic, but isn’t that how thoughts usually go when one is going crazy? This song sounds like the jumbled mental mess of someone who feels like he’s losing his mind. The protagonist sings about cracking his head open because of a head spin and talking fish. Unsurprisingly, this was the chosen soundtrack for the movie Fight Club, which is also a movie about mental illness.
Crazy lyrics: With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there’s nothing in it
And you’ll ask yourself
Where is my mind
Where is my mind
Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
Gnarls Barkley also has a song about losing one’s mind, but in this case, he embraces the insanity. Cee-Lo Green explained that the song was actually written during a difficult time for him. He was going through a divorce, and thing were looking bleak. Thankfully, his production company pushed him to turn his pain into art, and that’s when he learned that all that from all that chaos something beautiful can arise.
Crazy lyrics: I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space
And when you’re out there, without care
Yeah I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much
Eminem – Kim
One of the most concrete manifestations of a severe psychotic illness is criminal behavior, and in this case that behavior is murder. In this song, Eminem sings about his extremely volatile relationship with his then-wife, Kim. He takes out all his frustrations on her, until he eventually chaser her down with a knife and kills her. Eminem admits to having been high on ecstasy when he wrote this song. And while his relationship with Kim was never truly this violent, it did raise some controversy on whether he truly had murderous intentions against her.
Crazy lyrics: I hate you! I hate you!
I swear to god I hate you
Oh my God I love you
How the fuck could you do this to me?
How the fuck could you do this to me?
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks
This song may sound fun and carefree, but it’s lyrics are so dark and depressing that you wouldn’t want to dance to it. Pumped Up Kicks is about a kid named Robert who gets his hands on his dad’s gun. He uses it to kill his old man and all the cool kids in school who are implied to have bullied him.
Crazy lyrics: All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet
