10 Frustrating Songs About Not Being Good Enough

Dita von Teese once said, “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.”

And isn’t it sad that no matter what we do, there will be someone out there who won’t even bother to give us the time of day? If that’s what you’re going through now, this playlist is perfect for you!

Kasey Chambers – Not Pretty Enough

To start off this list, we have the obvious choice: Kasey Chambers’ heartbreaking hit. Not Pretty Enough is a song about a woman whose self-esteem issues seem to be seeping through to the outside. She wonders about her self-worth since she sees herself as not being pretty enough or funny enough. Thing song wasn’t actually meant to be a love song; instead, it was Chambers’ song for radio stations refusing to play her songs because she didn’t fit the same mold as other pop stars. Ironically, it was her breakthrough hit.

Not good enough lyrics: Am I not pretty enough

Is my heart too broken

Do I cry too much

Am I too outspoken

Dishwalla – Every Little Thing

Have you ever felt like the one you love is too far away for you to reach? We’re not just talking about distance, but also about being in a different phase in their life. In Every Little Thing, the singer wishes to be everything his love interest wants him to be. He’s always there for her when she falls, but all she can give him is a superficial relationship despite him wanting more.

Not good enough lyrics: But I get the strangest feeling that you’ve gone away

Will you find out who you are too late to change

I wish I could be

Every little thing you wanted

All the time

Fall Out Boy – A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me

If you’re wondering about the odd title of the song, it’s based off of a teen movie called Sixteen Candles starring Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael. Both in the movie and the song, the main character is obsessed with a girl who doesn’t return his feelings. In the song, however, the guy resorts to sleeping on his porch, and in her disgust, the girl tells him to just drop dead. Harsh!

Not good enough lyrics: And you’re just the girl all the boys want to dance with

And I’m just the boy who’s had too many chances

I’m sleeping on your folk’s porch again, dreaming

She said, she said, she said, “Why don’t you just drop dead?”

Radiohead – Creep

Vocalist Thom Yorke has gone on to say that this song was written because of his problems being a manly-man back in the 90s. He didn’t want his music to be overly brutal in its arrogance, but he didn’t want to write lyrics that sound too effeminate. So in the end, he wrote Creep as a portrayal of how men can often feel intimidated by someone they love. In his words, he says, “There’s the beautiful people, and then there’s the rest of us.”

Not good enough lyrics: I want you to notice

When I’m not around

You’re so fuckin’ special

I wish I was special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.

What the hell am I doing here?

I don’t belong here

Lifehouse – Good Enough

Lifehouse’s Good Enough is a song about wanting so much to earn the admiration or love of someone, and letting that desire weigh down on you. In the song, the protagonist asks what he has to do to make the object of his desire see him for what he really is. He recalls the times when he tried to do what he could to make this person love him or at least respect him, but all those efforts ended up backfiring on him.

Not good enough lyrics: It seems the more we talk

The less I have to say

Let’s put our differences aside

I wanted to make you proud

But I just got in your way

I found a place that I can hide

Beyonce – Why Don’t You Love Me

It’s hard to imagine how anyone could possible not love the fabulous Beyonce. In this song, she laments how the man she’s in love with won’t love him back. She enumerates all her good traits and all the great things she does for him, and yet she can’t understand why her man can’t seem to think she’s good enough. In the end, she gets fed up with the guy not wanting her and explains it off as him being plain dumb.

Not good enough lyrics: Why don’t you love me?

Tell me, baby, why don’t you love me

When I make me so damn easy to love?

And why don’t you need me?

Tell me, baby, why don’t you need me

When I make me so damn easy to need?

Adele – Chasing Pavements

There are some relationships that leave us hurt and broken while we’re in it, but once we get out we srot of still miss it. This is exactly the conflict of feelings Adele is going through in Chasing Pavements. This is the perfect song when you end up getting out of a toxic relationship while still kind of wishing your ex was still around.

Not good enough lyrics: Should I give up

Or should I just keep chasing pavements?

Even if it leads nowhere

Or would it be a waste?

Even If I knew my place should I leave it there?

Should I give up

Or should I just keep chasing pavements?

Even if it leads nowhere

Jack Johnson – Sitting, Waiting, Wishing

Despite what some of you might think, this was written by Johnson not for himself but for a friend who was so in love with this girl. In the song, the protagonist is pining for this girl who doesn’t return his feelings. And even though she shoots him down time and again, he still persists on sitting, waiting, and wishing.

Not good enough lyrics: Keep building it up

But then you’re shooting me down

But I’m already down

Just wait a minute

Just sitting, waiting

Just wait a minute

Just sitting, waiting

Pearl Jam – Black

This is the song that made Eddie Veder say in an interview, “I’ve heard it said that you can’t really have a true love unless it was a love unrequited.” In this heartbreaking song about lost love, the singer looks back on the times they had together before time and differences washed it all black.

Not good enough lyrics: I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life

I know you’ll be a star

In somebody else’s sky

But why

Why can’t it be

Why can’t it be mine

songs about not being good enough for him

Bonnie Rait – I Can’t Make You Love Me

To cap off this list, we have a song inspired by a drunk man who shot up his girlfriend’s car and declared, “You Can’t make a woman love you if she don’t.” Drunken rages aside, the song is about the extremes of unrequited love. In this heartbreakingly honest song, the singer knows that the one she loves doesn’t love her back. However, that doesn’t stop her from wanting to stay by his side even as he uses her.

Not good enough lyrics: Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t

You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t

Here in the dark, in these final hours

I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power

But you won’t, no you won’t

‘Cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t

Even if someone thinks you’re not good enough for them, just remember this: There’s just no pleasing everybody!
