While we may be proud of our own achievements, it helps to also express gratitude towards the people who have helped us get where we are. In this list, we tackle 15 songs that allow you to show your thanks to someone (whether a friend, a lover, or even a stranger), so that you can tell them how glad you are for their presence in your life.

Dido – Thank You

Do you ever have one of those days when everything feels like a downward spiral? You feel like nothing is going right in your day? And then all of a sudden, someone’s presence just perks you right up and makes you forget about all the crap you’ve had to put up with? If there’s a person like that in your life, you’re extremely lucky. And you definitely need to dedicate this song to them.

Lyrics of gratitude: Push the door, I’m home at last and I’m soaking

Through and through then you handed me a towel

And all I see is you, and even if my house falls

Down now, I wouldn’t have a clue because you’re near me

Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings

Throughout all your successes and your triumphs, there must be at least one person you would like to thank, right? That’s the person who has supported you along the way without taking any credit for your success. That’s the person who deserves to hear this song from you – for being the quiet, gentle force that has guided you along the way.

Lyrics of gratitude: It might have appeared to go unnoticed

But I’ve got it all here in my heart

I want you to know I know the truth

Of course I know it

I would be nothing without you

ABBA – Thank You for the Music

This hit from Swedish pop group ABBA is an expression of gratitude towards their own talent for singing. The band, though already established at this time, would like to show their thanks to the wonders of music and how it can bring so much joy to people.

Lyrics of gratitude: So I say thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing

Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing

Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty

What would life be?

Without a song or a dance what are we?

So I say thank you for the music

For giving it to me

Mariah Carey feat. Joe – Thank God I Found You

When you’ve been through a slew of terrible relationships, there will come a time when you feel like you’ve found your hero. This hero is the partner that reminds you of how wonderful it is to be in love with someone. In a way, it’s like they’re showing you that it is possible to have a healthy relationship with someone. This song by Mariah Carey was inspired by her relationship with then-boyfriend Luis Miguel, who showed her that love doesn’t always have to hurt.

Lyrics of gratitude: Thank God I found you

I was lost without you

My every wish and every dream

Somehow became reality

When you brought the sunlight

Completed my whole life

I’m overwhelmed with gratitude

‘Cause baby I’m so thankful I found you

Tyler Collins – Thanks to You

This straightforward song about being thankful for someone’s love has become a popular love song among couples. It’s a sweet declaration of love through gratitude that will definitely uplift anyone you sing this song to. So when you find that person who has shown you true love – whether it’s a partner, a friend, a relative, or a community – ask them to listen to this song.

Lyrics of gratitude: Thank you for teaching me how to love

Showing me what the world means

What I’ve been dreaming of

And now I know, there is nothing that I could not do

Thanks to you

Marvin Gaye – How Sweet It Is

Ever wanted to take a moment to tell your partner how they’ve made your life better through their love? How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) is the perfect, catchy song to express that sentiment. The song was later covered by James Taylor, which also became a successful hit. It just goes to show that this soulful love song stands the test of time.

Lyrics of gratitude: I needed the shelter of someone’s arms

And there you were

I needed someone to understand my ups and downs

And there you were

With sweet love and devotion deeply touching my emotion

I want to stop and thank you, baby

I just want to stop and thank you, baby, hey now

How sweet it is to be loved by you

Celine Dion – Because You Loved Me

Because You Loved Me was written by Diane Warren as a tribute to her father, who guided her and encouraged her throughout her life. She was inspired by a preview of the movie she was writing the song for called Falling Into You. At the end of the movie, she wondered, “What would I want to hear at the end of this movie?” The director of the movie then played her a tape of a gospel song, which inspired her to write a fitting song both for the movie and as a song of thanks to her father.

Lyrics of gratitude: I’m grateful for each day you gave me

Maybe I don’t know that much

But I know this much is true

I was blessed because I was loved by you

Elton John – Your Song

Elton John’s timeless song has been used time and again in movies, commercials, and more. The song itself is about the innocent love of a protagonist for a person. The protagonist then sings about various things he wishes he could do for the person he loves – like buying a house where they can live. Throughout the song he admits that all he can come up with is this simple song telling this person that the world is a better place with their presence.

Lyrics of gratitude: And you can tell everybody this is your song

It may be quite simple but now that it’s done

I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words

How wonderful life is while you’re in the world

Fall Out Boy – Thnks fr th Mmrs

With all these sweet songs of gratitude, we simply had to add at least one angsty song to the list. The disemvowelled title alludes to the deteriorated relationship between two people who still continue to sleep with each other, saying that it’s the last time when they know that’s a lie. The end of the chorus also echoes this, as the line is taken directly from the very depressing play and film Closer.

Lyrics of gratitude: Thanks for the memories even though they weren’t so great

He tastes like you, only sweeter

One night, yeah, and one more time

Thanks for the memories, thanks for the memories

See, he tastes like you, only sweeter, oh

The Beatles – With a Little Help from My Friends

Isn’t life made a whole lot easier because of great friends? Sadly, this song has a bit of a melancholy history because it was one of the last songs John Lennon and Paul McCartney truly wrote together. To add insult to injury, the song was accused of being a tribute to the power of illegal drugs by US vice president Spiro Agnew. What a way to ruin a great song!

Lyrics of gratitude: What would you think if I sang out of tune

Would you stand up and walk out on me?

Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song

And I’ll try not to sing out of key

Oh I get by with a little help from my friends

Andrew Gold – Thank You for Being a Friend

Many of you know this song as the theme from the sitcom The Golden Girls, which is actually a show about the friendship of four elderly ladies. It’s a fitting song for the show because it’s a simple song of thanks and assurance that he will be there until the end.

Lyrics of gratitude: I’m not ashamed to say

I hope it always will stay this way

My hat is off, won’t you stand up and take a bow

And when we both get older

With walking canes and hair of gray

Have no fear even though it’s hard to hear

I will stand real close and say

Thank you for being a friend

Foo Fighters – My Hero

My Hero may seem like a song that you sing to the person you idolize – perhaps a famous singer, a movie actor, or a famous celebrity. But the band has stated that it’s actually a tribute to all the “everyday heroes” we see each day. These are the people who don’t make huge, sweeping changes in the world; instead, they’re the regular folk who make life easier for other people through their kindness and diligence.

Lyrics of gratitude: Kudos, my hero

Leaving all the best

You know my hero

The one that’s on

There goes my hero

Watch him as he goes

There goes my hero

He’s ordinary

Third Eye Blind – Thanks a Lot

So it turns out that Fall Out Boy isn’t the only one with the angsty entry on this list. Third Eye Blind’s Thanks a Lot isn’t exactly a song of gratitude, but more of a passive-aggressive song about a love that used to be. The protagonist sings about a woman whom he knows has fallen out of love with him, but now that he feels the same way, it’s time to show her that he now holds the upper hand. And in the end, he manages to thank her for their mess of a relationship.

Lyrics of gratitude: All hands on deck boys ’cause this ship was made to sink

Your swabber salutes you now, but I know what he’s thinking

I woke you up and I slit the throat of your confidence

And we laughed in the night, and I felt all right

Thanks a lot

Hall and Oates – You Make My Dreams

So let’s go back to feel-good tracks about genuine thankfulness. This catchy tune by Hall and Oates is about finding the person who can chase your demons away. While they don’t explicitly state that they’re saying thank you, twisting and shouting for joy makes a big enough statement we think!

Lyrics of gratitude: On a night when bad dreams become a screamer

When they’re messin’ with the dreamer

I can laugh it in the face

Twist and shout my way out

And wrap yourself around me

‘Cos I ain’t the way you found me

And I’ll never be the same

Louis Armstrong – What a Wonderful World

And we cap off this list with a jazzy ballad by Louis Armstrong. It’s a song of gratitude towards all the wonderful things in this earth with a hearty mix of appreciation for the little things that might pass us by. If you want to fill your soul with love and thankfulness for the world around you, this is the song for you.

Lyrics of gratitude: The colors of the rainbow

So pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces

Of people going by

I see friends shaking hands

Saying, “How do you do?”

They’re really saying

“I love you”

So what do you have to be thankful for? Is it a good friend, a loving partner, or just everything good that’s been going in in your life? We’re sure you’ll find a fitting song in this list!
