Ladies, we’ve all have our share of futile attempts at starting a conversation on Tinder. With the new way of social media and the internet all around us, one of the most popular places to meet guys is online. Now, this isn’t a bad thing! In fact, it can be pretty useful when it comes to weeding out the guys who just want you for one thing and the guys who are more interested in you as a person.
With Tinder, you can easily swipe left or right to indicate your interest in a plethora of single guys in your area. While it may be tempting to swipe right and sit back, waiting for the guy to message you first, this can mean you’ll get more messages from guys who more interested in getting laid than they are in getting to know you. So what to do?
Starting the conversation can be a little intimidating, especially when society is still pushing the idea that guys have to start everything first. But with the modern woman, that simply isn’t true. Ladies, if you match with a guy and you’re interested in what he has to say on his bio, there’s no reason that you should sit around and hope that he messages you. Take some initiative and dig in. But make sure that you have a conversation starter that will pique his interest
It might be tempting to just shoot off a quick “Hey!”, but that’s bound to get you ignored in favor of other messages he’s received. Instead, try something a little more unique to set you apart from everyone else.
1. Compare him to a celebrity
He doesn’t really have to look like them exactly, but opening up a line of conversation comparing him to an attractive celebrity that you know is always a pleaser. Either he’ll agree or disagree, but either way he’ll definitely be flattered. Not only is this a far more interested conversation starter than just a plain old “Hello”, but it’ll show that you’re interested in him enough to actually try to start a conversation. If you’re lucky, you can turn it into a bit of a game, playing back and forth the type of celebrities that you each remind one another of.
2. Give him a compliment
Do you like his beard? Does his man-bun look especially endearing? Maybe you’re really struck by the color of his eyes. Whatever it is, go ahead and tell him. Tossing a guy a compliment as a girl is a bit different than men doing it the other way around, especially if you really mean it. Guys tend not to get as many compliments right off the bat as girls do when it comes to Tinder. So make his day by giving him a compliment. After all, guys deserve to be flattered as well!
3. Start with Two Truths and a Lie
This opener is both fun and a great way to get to know one another. Instead of starting with a simple “Hey, what’s up?” try getting him to play Two Truths and a Lie. The point of the game is to tell the other person two truths and one lie and then have them guess which is the lie. You can be as sneaky, subtle or silly as you want. This way, you’ll be both having fun and teasing him little bits of information about yourself, as well as learning new things about him along the way. You can also make sure the truths are hidden somewhere in your bio, so that you can tell whether or not he’s actually read it.
4. Cheesy pick-up line
Normally, it’s the girls who are on the receiving end of a cheesy pick up line. So why not reverse the cards and open up your Tinder conversation with one of the cheesiest and silliest pick up lines you can think of? Not only will this break the ice and probably make him laugh, but guys are less used to being on the receiving end of a pick up line that girls are. It might even make him feel a bit flattered. Of course, you’ll want to choose a pick up line that’s so cheesy that there’s no way that he can mistake it for a real pick up line. You want the opening of your Tinder conversation to be relaxed and maybe a little bit flirtatious. So, use a cheesy pick up line that’ll make him laugh rather than make him think he’s about to get laid.
5. “F**k, Marry, Kill.”
This is a game where you give the other person three choices of people – they can be celebrities or anyone at all. The point of the game is to have the other person choose who they would have a one night stand with, who they would marry, and who they would kill. Opening up with this can be both fun and reveal a few things about him right away – for example, his taste in women, or if he’s squeamish if you give him a line-up of all guys
6. Tell a joke
Jokes are a great way to break the ice. It’s hard to tell someone’s sense of humor just from their Tinder bio. Even though guys are usually more used to crass or crude jokes, it’s best to start of with something light, funny and wholesome. When you get to know one another more, you’ll probably be more used to telling more crude jokes with one another (if you’re into that!). But for a Tinder conversation opening, sticking with a funny joke that requires a little audience participation is a good way to start a conversation back and forth.
There are so many hard to solve or intriguing riddles that you can find all over the internet. Why not start off a Tinder conversation and see how much of his brain power he’s willing to use? Shoot him a riddle and see what he comes up with for the answer. Not only is this a unique conversation starter, but you’ll be more likely to get you a response. After all, who can resist answering a riddle? They can be easy or difficult – you can even have some fun shooting riddles back and forth with one another. It’s a great way to both break the ice and get to know one another, since the answers are bound to be hysterical.
8. Be straightforward
While this often isn’t a tactic that can work from guys to girls, it does have some novelty when flipped. When a girl is more straightforward with a guy as a Tinder conversation, it tends to generate a response more often than not. So, if you’re attracted to him, think your interests match up, and want to hang out – why not just ask him? Send him a message asking if he wants to meet up for drinks, or just to hang out in a public area (safety first!). Or, if you don’t want to leave it open ended, just go ahead and ask when he’s free. If he likes you back, there’s a big chance that you’ll be setting a date to get together very quickly.
9. “Hello, handsome!”
Alright, so we all know that “Hey, what’s up?” is a opening line that will get your Tinder message flat out ignored at worst, or generate a stagnant conversation at best. However, a lot of guys seem to respond pretty agreeable to a simple, “Hello, handsome!” when it comes from women. After all, guys tend to message girls first, and a lot of girls are on the receiving end of random guys telling them how pretty they are, or getting an immediate: “What’s up, sexy?” Instead, flip the script on him! Shoot him a simply “Hello, handsome”. He’ll be both intrigued, flattered, and ready to reply to your message.
Tinder can be all kinds of fun, and it’s a great way to meet friends and potential dating partners. Yet, it can be a real drag when you’re not getting any responses from the guys that you’ve messaged. Never fear, these potential Tinder conversation starters will show that you have a little more to say than just “Hello”, and it’ll make him interested in carrying on a conversation with you for longer than a few lines of messages.
Now that you’ve got some new ideas on how to send a guy a Tinder message, go out and catch you a man!
