What Does It Mean When You Dream About Someone You Used to Love?

Your subconscious mind is an amazing thing. Even if you cannot remember all of the details of your childhood consciously, the memories are still tucked away within your subconscious mind. This is especially true for profound memories like falling in love with someone. Whenever you love someone deeply, you develop strong, lasting memories.

After you break up, you obviously try to move on and stop thinking about them. In your daily life, there still may be a scent or action that reminds you of them. Their personality and physique may suddenly appear in your mind’s eye.

There are two main reasons why you might have this type of dream. The first reason is that something reminded you of them. You may not have even consciously realized it. Perhaps you smelled a scent that made you recall the way that person smelled. You did not think about it at the time, but your subconscious remembered it. Because of that sudden reminder, your subconscious gave you the dream about them that night.

This type of dream has a tendency to reoccur. The feelings you once had were strong, so the dream leaves a lasting impression. Because of this, you are more likely to have a similar dream again and again.

Another reason why you will commonly dream about someone you used to love is because of your memories. Currently, scientists believe that all of your dreams are made from memories, images and feelings of the past. Since they once played a strong role in your life, it only makes sense that you would have a number of memories of them. Because there are so many memories tucked away, these images are more likely to reappear in your dreams.

You Want to Find Love Again

This is another common reason for a dream about someone you used to love. After the break up, it can take a while until you find the right person. Even if you are dating someone, it will take time to build up the same bond of affection and love. Your subconscious may be giving you these dreams because you want to find the same deep, lasting bond. You may not have found a new partner yet, or you may not have a deep relationship with them. Either way, your subconscious may be giving you these dreams because you want to find lasting love in your waking life.

Something Is Off in Your Current Relationship

Sometimes, the subconscious mind will use dreams as a way to escape. You may have found an amazing partner, but you are suddenly embroiled in arguments about money. Or, you feel like you are getting ignored because your date is focusing so much on his or her work. Either way, you feel like something is wrong and you are not getting everything you need from the relationship. Because of this, your subconscious is giving you dreams of the type of love you want.

This type of dream does not mean that you loved your ex more or that you want to get back together. It may just be a sign that you need to spice things up in your current romance or find ways to fix the underlying problems.

You Miss Them

Logically, you know that it was the best decision to move on with your life. While your conscious mind may understand and accept this, your subconscious mind may have problems with it. Even if the relationship was toxic, there were still qualities and character traits that drew you to that person. It is only natural that you might miss the good things, even though you definitely remember the bad things as well.

You Need Comfort

When you are going through a lot of stress at work or having an argument with friends, it can feel like there is no one to turn to. If you once used this ex as a source of comfort and strength, it makes sense that your subconscious mind would return them to you. You are looking for support in your waking life, so your dream world is trying to give you the help that you deserve.

Having a dream about someone you used to love does not mean that you want to get back together with him or her. Often, it is just an echo of the past. It may represent a feeling or desire in your current life. If you have moved on from your ex for a reason, then it is important that you do not go back to them. In some cases, a dream really is just a dream.

  1. Hi Courtney
I’ve been having a hard time for years trying to figure out why I keep dreaming about this particular person from childhood. He is in my dreams regularly even though I don’t think about him during the day at all. I had a childhood crush on him and he basically rejected me one day when he found out I liked him. Throughout my adult life, he has continued to basically haunt me in my dreams. Nothing ever happens, he’s just there, a presence really. Now his wife is in my dreams too (I also knew her from youth). Any thoughts?

    • Your dreams are reflections of your previous social relationships. It is possible that the experience during your childhood was formative. Since both of them are married to each other, you should allow these thoughts to fade. If you have similar dreams in the future, then address them within the dream about the purpose of their presence. Focus your emotional energy elsewhere, and nourish your current social and emotional relationships. Have a great day, Mariah!

  2. I keep having a dream where my early childhood crush comes back into my life and we end up together. The dreams are always similar, usually there is an obstacle to get past.

Tonight I dreamed in parts every time I woke up the dream shifted but the theme was the same.

Parts rotated between (1) My kids dad came back and I had to tell him if he’s clean from drugs then we can go to mediation for visitation and (2) reconnecting with the boy I had a major crush on in elementary school. In the first parts we reconnected, but at the parts with my kids’ dad got more emotional,5$3 parts with my crush increased as well. He became a comfort to me about the kids and then we went out.

These dreams are more vivid than most of my others and continue even after I wake up and fall back asleep. This makes it hard to want to go back to sleep. It’s been occuring for 5-6 hours tonight but I don’t need to be awake for another 3 hours and would really like some solid rest.

I fell asleep listening to country music, but this shouldn’t be relative to either person, neither of them ever listened to this music.

I understand why my kids’ dad pops up in my dream, usyu happens after someone asks me about him and Aries up emotions. But why does my crush keep reappearing, we haven’t seen each other or spoken in any real way for 20 years. The only way were still connected is social media.

    • Your dream is a manifestation of your emotional connection with your previous crush. There may be something in your life that reminded you of him. Since you brought up country music, it is possible that the genre of music is related to your emotional thoughts and feelings. Make a decision about what you want for your future. If there is someone in your life that you want to maintain a relationship with, then speak with that person about your thoughts and feelings. Have a great day, Crush!

  3. Hello i just want to consult my dream. I always dream of my someone I used to loved before. I love him so much. But we didnt end uo with each other, even though he didnt confess to me directly that he loved me also, some of our friends are aware, and his movement towards he are showing that he likes me also. Now thay I already have a family, I always dream about him. In my dreams, he was confessing to me. Diffrsnt scenarios, locations byt the scene is always the same. He wa saying that he loves me and want to be with me. The thing there is that I also want to be with him too, but I dont know since I already have a huaband. What is the meaning of my dreams? Thank you

    • Your dream is a reflection of this person who you once shared a strong emotional and social relationship with. The two of you decided not to maintain a romantic relationship together. You are now married. Allow thoughts of this other person to fade, and nourish your relationship with your partner by spending additional time with him in person. Have a great day, Joy!

  4. Hey I keep having dreams about my first love from time to time, but they’re always different. Like in some dreams he’s protecting me from something or someone, but in others we’re in an intimate setting. I also have dreams where we’re together and have a family, but then I have dreams where we’re trying to figure out where we went wrong and why. But then, the one I had last night, I ran into him while I was out and we just smiled at each other and walked out the establishment together and it’s like he was in a rush to get somewhere because he sped off in his car but ended up stopping in the middle of the street to help someone that got put out of a car. I know what the other dreams mean, but I have no idea about this one.

    • Your dream is a reflection of your social and emotional connection with your first love. If you are still in contact with this person and feel that it would be appropriate to reach out to him, then do so. Regardless of your decision, you will find great benefit in sharing your kindness and compassion with everyone in your life. Have a great day, Yasheta!

  5. Hey I keep having dreams about my first love from time to time but they’re always different. Like some we’re together and have a family, and then there’s some where we’re in an intimate setting just having casual conversations, like a date. But then I have some where he’s protecting me from something or someone, then there’s the ones where we’re trying to figure out where we went wrong and why. They are all over the place. Like the one I had last night, I bumped into him while out with some friends at a restaurant and we just smiled at each other and walked outside together talking. Then it was like he was in a rush to get somewhere or something because he got in his car and sped off after I gave him my number and told him to call me but he didn’t get far because he ended up stopping to help someone that got put out of a car. He told me he still missed me and that he would call me and that’s when I woke up. Weird, right?

  6. I’ve recently had a dream about an old crush from 2 years ago I barely dated. We’ve only talked for about 6 months and I was falling in love with her and she later told me she lost feelings for me. The hurt I felt was horrible because I’ve never told her I loved her but I’m pretty sure she knew how I felt about her. Shortly afterwards she got into a relationship with this guy and now have A kid together.

My Dream that I had she was in we reconnected, talked laugh hung out. I asked her was she was single and she was scared to tell me. I asked her cousin and she said yes she’s single, and my crush told me she tried to tell me but didn’t want it to make it obvious. I woke up feeling happy, pissed, sad, and confused because I wasn’t thinking about her. I still have feelings for her because she’s the last person I ever caught feelings for , so almost everyday I do think about her even though it’s been 2 years since she ended things between us. Just when I feel I’m like 80%-90% over her something triggers a old memory and I think about her a lot. I’ve tried the law of attraction to manifest a text message from her but no luck. We haven’t spoken in a year , I just really want to know what this dream means because I wanna believe she thinks about me, but I’m reality I knows she doesn’t she has no reason to, she has a boyfriend and a child with him and I haven’t seen her face to face in a year. Can you please tell me what does my me dreaming about her mean ?

    • Your dream is a reflection of your previous emotional connection for your crush. You are aware that she has a partner and they have a child together. Make a decision about what you want for your future without her. You will find great benefit in sharing your kindness and compassion at all times. This will help draw positive people and energy into your life. Have a great day, Larry!

  7. Ok please help me so about a year ago I met this girl who was older than me and we worked at the same place we got together and because close I did not mention this girl is married ! And once we talked for a while something sparked between us ! And she and I had relationships secretly she fell For me and so did i it was perfect she was perfect truly love her and she said she could no longer hurt me because she was taken already and I recently had a dream of her I know it can be about me thinking of her and missing her but ughhh I don’t get it

    • Your dream is a reflection of your emotional relationship with this person from your past. However, you are aware that she is married. Do not attempt to maintain a romantic relationship with her. If her relationship ends and she reaches out to you, then speak with her about your thoughts and feelings at this time. For now, simply share your kindness and compassion with everyone in your life. Have a great day, Spade!

  8. So i keep having dreams about my first crush. We were friends but when he heard rumours about me liking him, he became distant and starting dating another girl. I still ran after him always and liked him for a whole year even though he clearly rejected me. But in my dreams he’s the one chasing me or talking to me and I’m the one running away from him.

    • These dreams are reflections of your social and emotional desires. It is possible that you are interested in having your crush pursue you. If he is currently maintaining a romantic relationship with someone at this time, then determine what you want for your future without him. You will find great benefit in sharing your kindness and compassion with everyone in your life. Have a great day, Alaska!

  9. I keep dreaming about a guy I really liked but never got the chance to date. I started dating my current boyfriend when that guy was ready to start a relationship, but it was too late because I had already started a relationship. I have been with this guy for almost 3 years and I love him, but lately I have been having dreams about the other guy and every time I think of him, I want to cry. I feel so emotional and I don’t know why. Do you have any idea?

    • You are with your partner and have been maintaining a committed relationship with him for three years. You have stated that you love him. Since that is the case, you should allow thoughts of this other person to fade. If your current relationship ends and this person from your past is single, then speak with him about your thoughts and feelings at that time. For now, focus your emotional energy on your current partner. Nourish your relationship by spending additional time together in person. Have a great day, Rebecca!

  10. So I just woke up a few minutes earlier, it’s like 4 am here. And I can remember my dream very clearly. Here’s the thing, I used to like my best friend and he used to like me back then we agreed on staying as friends. But he just moved to a different school so we only talk on messenger nowadays.. And I get this feeling that he likes this girl that’s from his class and is the complete opposite of me, she’s literally x100 better! Anyways, so I told myself over and over that I DON’T LIKE HIM ANYMORE because it’ll only hurt me if I like someone who doesn’t like me back, plus, he’s too far away, I would be even sadder if I like someone I no longer can’t see. I thought it was easy moving on from just a crush, until I had this dream about him.. It was a weird dream but there’s this scene where I was acting like I’m straight up his girlfriend and putting up no boundaries whatsoever. It was never a lucid dream but when it got to that particular scene (when I got closer to him) I felt like I could control myself, and I knew that I was dreaming, the realization was real, dude. This is too much info for just a comment but since I knew that I was in a dream, I tried to kiss him because I knew that I’m gonna wake up soon. And I was right, I woke up before I kissed him. Half of my brain has no clue why I wanted to kiss him because I swear I don’t like him anymore, but I guess the other half of me just wanted to experience the whole thing.

    • Even if you genuinely don’t like him anymore, you still have dreams of liking him in the past. Because of this, your subconscious mind may have drawn on these memories to create your dream. At a minimum, your dream is a reflection of the fact that you would like to find love and romance in your waking life.

  11. I had a dream about a guy I once used to like but im completely over him now. The dream consisted of him laying in my arms and me giving him a hug and playing with his hair. He then gave me his phone to reassure me that I am the one he wants and that he is not speaking to anyone else but me. This is weird because we havent spoken for quite some time now as we drifted. We were speaking for 2 months until he realised that its wrong in our religion and that he doesnt want any relationship until marriage, and if its meant to be that we end up together then thats based on destiny. He did really like me but he had to let go of me for God and we believed that if its meant to be we shall be together. But i keep dreaming about this guy and usually were always together.

    • This dream is a reflection of your previous emotional connection with your ex. You are aware that this relationship has concluded, so you should focus your emotional energy elsewhere.

  12. Dear Admin, I have been dreaming about this girl from time to time who I used to have a crush on in middle school and then high school. From what I remembered, there wasn’t anything significant that could trigger my memories of her during the day whenever I dreamt of her in my sleep at night; it was more of a random pattern. We were classmates for 5 years, developed mutual feelings for each other but we never had the chance to take things to the next step. It ended on a sour note too back then. She moved on since then, had a boyfriend but she broke up with him not too long ago. On my side, I found myself having a crush on this girl who I had known since childhood, after knowing that she had lingering feelings for me for quite some time. We were progressing, until she decided to step on the brakes due to us rushing into a relationship too quickly without knowing each other well enough beforehand. In the end we have decided to remain as friends, but this incident had me thinking about whether my actions (ie rushing into a relationship) was a reflex action of my subconscious mind to find love in order to find a leverage just for me to get over this girl that I used to like for a good amount of years in my life. Certainly without a doubt I liked this girl who I had the privilege to know during my childhood, but I realised I was never as attracted to her compared to the girl that I used to like in middle school then high school. Then again I dreamt about my high school crush just yesterday night which got me into this dilemma again. My conscious mind had already moved on from her but the dreams of her had been bothering me for three years or so (since the time we ended things), therefore I had to come to this page in order to seek for consultation because I need a solution. Tried asking her out, originally intending to catch up with her as friends just to see how is she doing in life since we haven’t seen each other since we had graduated from high school but she immediately shut down our chances of getting into a relationship (although I also intend to talk to her on how she feel about things between the both of us during that face-to-face meet-up, but without stating this intention clearly while texting her). Any clue on how should I go about this matter?

    • Once a dream occurs, it will often be repeated because each dream further cements the memory in your subconscious. These repeated dreams may not reflect your current feelings at all; instead, they may just show the memories you have and previous dreams you’ve experienced. Since she has already shut you down and shown that she doesn’t want to pursue anything, the best thing you should do is just listen to her.

  13. I keep having a dream about my first love for a while I recently added him on snap and we started talking we haven’t talked for about 2 months now. I knew him and we had a thing since I was 10-15 and something happened with our parents and now we don’t see each other anymore but I can’t get him out of my head and I have a boyfriend but my first love is still in my head all the time and I don’t know why

    • First loves tend to hold an outsized role in the subconscious mind. Your feelings are stronger, and they are a relationship that is truly one-of-a-kind. These dreams are most likely happening because of these reasons, although I suppose it is also possible that you miss a certain trait or characteristic that your first love represented. Either way, it does not reflect on how much you love your boyfriend, so don’t read too much into it.

  14. every once in a while i have dreams about an ex who really hurt me and it’s been over two years and i don’t get why i still dream about him. everytime i wake up sad. i have zero contact with him too i completely cut him out. usually it’s us flirting in the dream. i also have a bf if a year and half i live with so idek why i would be thinking about this guy.

    • His behaviors were harmful to you, so it is certain that he had a powerful, negative influence on your feelings. It is possible that something in your life had reminded you of him. Allow him to fade from your thoughts. If you have similar dreams in the future, then address him within your dream regarding his purpose.

  15. Hi!
I’m having dreams about my first love. It has happened a month ago but I didn’t give much attention to it and now it happened again. We have not seen each other for almost five years now. Recently, I’ve broken up with my boyfriend because I couldn’t connect with him emotionally.
Talking about my first love, I knew him in school, so when school ended we stopped seeing each other.
But in my dream, he was in my university and very were happy together and we were smoking a cigarette. Some stranger passing by us commented critically about us. And then we went to meet my friend(who doesn’t know anything about him in real life) who also criticised something about me being with him(I don’t remember).

    • It seems that this dream is a reflection of your various emotional and social relationships in your life. It is possible that you may be interested in reaching out to this person from your past. It is possible that the other friend in your dream could be a sign that you are concerned about your other social relationships. Take this time to determine what you want for your future, and take whatever action that you feel is appropriate.
