What Does Seeing a Dead Person Alive in My Dream Mean?

When you see someone from your past in the dream, it can be thrilling at first. After a loved one dies, you may fear never seeing them again. First, you start to forget the way their voice sounded or the way they looked when they laughed. Before long, it feels like you are forgetting everything about them. When you finally dream about your loved one, it can be a bit of a relief. Even if it was not a particularly positive dream, it still feels good to be close to your loved one again.

While it may be a relief at times, seeing a dead person alive in your dream can also be quite terrifying. You may be afraid that they have come back to earth to haunt you for a mistake or argument you had together. You may be worried that they have unfinished business or that something is wrong. If you are worried about seeing a dead person alive in your dream, read on to find out why this happens.

Losing someone is never easy. If you are lucky, you know that they are ill in advance. This gives your loved one time to make amends and say good-bye to everyone. In some cases, the family members do not have enough time to say good-bye. A brutal attack or car crash can take a loved one away before you get to make amends.

When this happens, moving on becomes even harder. As much as you want to heal, you can’t. You know that you never apologized for an argument or an unkind word, so you feel haunted by the past. When this type of situation happens, it can lead you to dream about your loved one. You see them alive in the dream because you want another chance to talk to them. This is your opportunity to make amends. You were unable to in real life, so your subconscious mind gave you another opportunity in your dream.

You Miss Them

Another more obvious answer is that you miss the. You do not get to have that person around you anymore, and you miss having their insight. Because you miss them, they began to appear in your dreams. This is especially common if you think about your loved one a lot. Your subconscious mind tends to pull from your thoughts and memories to create your dreams. If you are thinking about your loved one all the time, then it is more likely that you will ultimately have a dream about them.

You Aren’t Listening

Some mystics believe that the dead return to our dreams to give us advice or share a warning. While this is probably not the case, there is an underlying truth in the argument. Sometimes, there are mistakes that we make in our everyday life that we do not recognize. You may be convinced that you are doing things the right way and are unwilling to listen to anyone else’s advice.

In this type of circumstance, the dead may return to your dreams to give you the advice that you so separately need. Your dead friend is not actually giving you advice. Instead, your subconscious chose their image to be the advice giver. Your subconscious mind may realize that you have a problem, so it chose a friendly, kind person to give you the advice in the dream. Since you were unwilling to take the advice on your own, this dream was basically your mind’s way of tricking you into doing the right thing.

You Do Not Accept the Past

Another common reason for dreaming that a dead person is alive is because you want them to be alive. Even though you logically know that they have passed on into the next world, a part of your mind does not believe it. Your subconscious still feels like your loved one could walk around the corner and sit down for dinner. Since a part of you has not accepted their death, you keep dreaming that they are real and still alive.

Other Interpretations

This type of dream has been dealt with since humanity first began. Depending on where you are in the world, the dream interpretation can vary. In one old book, seeing dead people as alive in your dream was a sign of good events for your family. They thought it was a sign of positive dreams like a wedding or a marriage.

In pagan cultures, the dream was a sign that you should follow the dead person’s request to avoid angering the gods. Another culture says that seeing a dead relative right before a wedding is a warning that the marriage will not work out. There is no general consensus on the dream’s meaning though, so your best bet is to analyze what happens in your dream and figure out the meaning that makes the most sense for your personal situation.

Dream of Dead Mother Being Alive

A mother is typically a symbol of nurturing, guidance and shelter. In life, they offer comfort and guidance. If you have a dream of your dead mother being alive, it may mean that you miss that part of her. Because of grief or another reason, you may be ignoring the subconscious cues that are telling you that you need those qualities in your waking life.

In most cases, this type of dream means that you either miss your mother or that you want some of the qualities she represents in your waking life. If you are talking to her in the dream, you may be trying to get her input on a problem that is confronting you in your waking life. It is also possible that your subconscious feels like your mother has an important message that you need to wake up and listen to. This could be a message from her spirit, or it may just be advice that your subconscious knows that she would give if she were still alive.

Dreaming of My Dead Father Being Alive

When you are dreaming of your dead father being alive again, it could mean a number of things. In dreams, fathers often represent things like protection, authority, independence and decision making. One basic reason why you might have this kind of dream is that you want these qualities in your own life. You may be struggling to make a decision or to project authority, so your subconscious mind is trying to nudge you into action with a dream about your dead father.

You may also have this type of dream if you just miss your father. Even if it has been years since he passed on, you still have memories of him locked away in your subconscious. These memories may reappear at random in your dreams, or they may show up when you feel in need of extra support in your waking life.

Dream of Dead Brother Being Alive

Fighting with your brother in a dream is said to mean that you may break off a friendship or fight with someone in your waking life. In more positive cases, dreaming about your brother indicates unity, domestic harmony and having a friend who always has your back. When you have a dream of a dead brother being alive, it may mean that you miss having such a friend and family member in your waking life.

To figure out what this dream means, you have to look at exactly what happens. Does he give you a message? Does he argue with you or ignore you? These key details can show you the underlying meaning of the dream and what is going on within your subconscious mind. Sometimes, the simplest answer is that you dreamed about your dead brother being alive because you miss his presence in your life.

Dreaming of Dead Relatives Being Alive

Dreaming of dead relatives being alive may represent that something missing or lost will suddenly return. It can also reflect on qualities that you are missing in your own life. For example, if you had an uncle who always made you feel safe and loved, you may be needing that extra love and security in your real life. Your subconscious may have given you the dream as a way to provide you with your emotional needs.

In other cases, you have this type of dream because you miss the person. You may feel like they have an important message to tell you. If you gave up on one of your goals and your relative used to urge you on toward your dreams, then their appearance in your dream may be a sign that you should return to the true you and focus on what you want out of life again.

Dream of a Dead Friend Being Alive

A good friend may appear in your dreams during a time of struggle or when you are striving to make a difficult decision. The dream of a dead friend being alive may just indicate that you need a little support in making this decision. Often, dreaming about a dead friend also means that you miss having this person in your life.

Sometimes, dreaming about a dead friend being alive again shows that you miss a quality or trait that they represent. If your friend was known for loving life and always having fun, you may dream about them when you are experiencing problems and need someone to lighten the mood again. Pay attention to what they do and say in the dream to interpret the meaning more exactly.

Hugging a Dead Person in Dream

Some cultures say that hugging a dead person in dreams is a sign of longevity if it is a short hug. In Islam dream interpretation, a long hug means that you are embracing your own death. A hug in your dream could show a need to love yourself. You may feel unable to love yourself or to be loved by someone else, so you dreamed that you were hugging a dead person.

The person that appears in your dream can determine what it means. If it is someone you normally hugged in real life, it may just mean that you miss them and want to have their love and support again. This is especially true if you are hugging a relative, parent or friend in your dream. You may just need extra support in your waking life, so your subconscious gave you a memory of a deceased loved one to support you.

My siblings don’t talk to me saying that I didn’t give money for my moms treatment so she passed. I didn’t have nor did I know she was sick. My mom comes in my dream often I cry . Feel sad.

    • The experiences with your family members influenced your relationship with your mother at the time of her death. It is not your responsibility to care for someone who chose to not speak with you, though your feelings are valid. However, you should allow the negative aspects of this dream to fade. It seems that you no longer have a connection with your sister, so there is no reason to consider her in the future.

  13. It sucks i keep having the same dream on my mother and I can’t sleep it fucks with me she passed away almost three years ago and I keep having the same dream of her death and it screws with a person mentally

    • The passing of your mother has influenced your dreams, and it seems that you have been impacted. Honor her memory by sharing your kindness and compassion at all times.

  14. @ej – I used to have that dream all the time… my boyfriend passed away in May 2016 and that was a frequent dream I had, he was a funny guy- so In my dream, it was all a prank, he faked his own death. I used to be so mad in my dream, in the beginning, so mad, asking questions, and just being so mad and upset in my dream. Then as I kept having the dreams where he was alive, I wasn’t even mad when he would say he faked his own death or it was a prank, I would just be happy to see him. And then last night, I had the similar dream- where I was waiting for him with
His family. We didn’t talk about we were just all waiting for him. No questions were asked. I just get so extremely happy anytime he shows up. It’s always so comforting.

    • Your dreams are reflections of your emotional relationship with your late partner. It is clear that his memory guides you in a positive direction. Honor his memory by sharing your kindness and compassion at all times.

  15. Uhh… I know this is really weird but I dreamed about this guy who died last month in an accident I just know him about two days ago and he’s already dead that time and he doesn’t know me. Then I dreamed about him like he was alive I was on his lap sitting and his arms were wrap around my waist and when I turned to him then he kissed me and that time we cuddled and watched movies. Actually he was my first kiss and first hug in my dream. I didn’t even meet him in person but this days this dream keeps on bothering me I even searched this through google and I didn’t even get the answer. I know it’s kinda weird but when I first saw him in a picture I had a crush on him. I hope you can help me about this thank you:>

    • After someone dies, it is always normal to wonder about the what-ifs. Even if you just thought that he looked attractive, your subconscious may have wondered what could have happened if he was still alive. A death is like a story ending prematurely, so it only makes sense that your subconscious mind would try to complete the ending in your dream.

  16. I dreamt I was outside my mums house and I was a teenager..I looked up the street and my deceased uncle was stood in the middle of the road wearing a brighter than bright white tracksuit..I ran up to him and hugged him and he hugged me back and that was it

    • The dream may show how much you miss your uncle and your desire to see what happened to him. Even though your conscious mind knows that he passed on, your subconscious mind may not realize this yet.

  17. I dreamed of a dead friend. We were at A location I was actually ready to be shot and he would not let me leave the place. He allowed everyone else to leave and get to safety but literally kept pulling me back every time I thought I got away he was there bringing me right back to the location . I was fussing at him like why won’t you let me get away .It has me scared honestly not knowing what it could mean.

    • The dream may show that you care about your friends, and you don’t want anything to happen to them. The fact that you are unable to protect your friend in the dream may mean you feel as if you are unable to protect the same friend in your waking life when you need to.

  18. I had a dream of my uncle who passed away around this time last year. He comes to me in my dream, alive to me but still dead to everyone else..he gives me a ride to the doctor for something and we come back home to his house. He told me some things that I can’t remember now, but then told me that he was going to die. But was going to sit there and die in his truck. I got emotional in the dream and told him how much I loved him ,etc, (things that i didnt tell him when he was alive) I begged him to go be seen, which he refused, so I begged him to just come inside the house. He did, went and got in the bed. Next all I remember is going back outside and
hysterically crying when his son pulled up and me telling them to please go inside with him and telling his wife she needed to go in there with him. (Him being already dead to them) I woke up crying and couldn’t get him out of my head. 😢

    • It is clear that your emotional connection with your late uncle has influenced this dream, and it seems that your various familial relationship are important to you. Take this time to determine how you can best honor his memory. Nourish your relationship with your family members by spending additional time together in person.

  19. The dream I had was….I walked into a room to find my dog and it was with my friend, but when I walked into the room my friend was alone on the couch with her face covered in bandages…wrapped right around her whole head…white gauze wrap. She was laying on the couch and I asked where the dog was….she became panicked cause she didn’t know who I was….she couldn’t see me as there were no eye holes…no nose holes…no mouth hole. I calmed her down and asked where the dog was. I wasn’t concerned about her face…for some odd reason. I knew that…in my dream…that she just had surgery. But she died about five years ago.

    • This dream is a manifestation of your previous emotional relationship with your late friend. It is clear that the two of you shared a powerful connection. The surgery may have been a reflection of your knowledge of change. Ensure that this dream guides you to share your kindness and compassion at all times, as this will honor the memory of your late friend.

      • Thank you. I do have changes coming up in my life…I know that. The compassion and kindness…I have….but I am not a humanitarian type person. My life’s lessons have brought me to that with humans. I was as well asked to speak in public at a convention about my afterlife experiences and the fact I can see the other side…..just a day or two before the dream. She knew I had the gift and I as well predict deaths….which I did hers, so she may saying to me….go for it….talk.

        • It sounds like you are confident in your feelings. It is clear that you have an understanding of your dreams, and we appreciate that you shared your thoughts and feelings. If you feel the need to take humanitarian action, then you will find many benefits will enter into your life.

  20. My father passed away about ten years ago when I was about 11. I never had these types of dreams until the last year or so. The lat two months I have these type of dreams almost everyone night. To the point I can’t hardly sleep. I dream that my father is still alive and never actually died. He left and went away for different reasons. Typically in my dreams it’s that he wanted to have a different life. But i know in reality my father would have NEVER left my family. My parents never fought in front of us so to this day I still believe they never fought and that their marriage was perfect because I never saw otherwise. I love my dad so much he was my hero. So I can’t understand why I would ever subconsciously be having these types of dreams. I wouldn’t never think he would leave my family. I know these dreams are silly but I wake up horrified and upset and crying. I scream at him in my dreams and I never did that in person I never would have. Please help me understand why I might be having these types of dreams.

    • The dreams are most likely happening because you miss him so much. Your subconscious mind created a logical reason for why he hasn’t been around, even if that reason obviously wouldn’t happen in real life. You scream at your father in your dreams because a part of you is angry that he isn’t here, even though he would obviously rather still be with you and your family. While this kind of dream is fairly traumatic to have, it is also quite normal, so I wouldn’t read too much into it.

  21. Hi
I had a dream of my ex boyfriend’s friend who died two weeks ago, in the dream he was showing me old WhatsApp massages from my ex talking about me how he messed up and after the conversation the deceased explained how he was shot n died. The conversation that we were having was in the grave yard
    Pls help

    • After someone dies, it is normal to have dreams like this. Your subconscious mind is most likely trying to process the fact that he has died. The fact that he said he was shot and died from it in the dream seems to indicate that your subconscious is already coming to terms with his passing.

  22. I dream of a girl that I didn’t know but I knew she was deceased from the feel of it death was all around me in the entire dream I asked her how is it she then replied don’t be afraid it’s not like you think and I really felt it …. threw her words that it’s not so bad….it felt so real…

    • Perhaps your subconscious mind is trying to use your dreams to help you come to terms with death. Dying is a common fear for people, and some people try to come to terms with the death and accept it before it happens. It is also possible that the death in your dream just represents some kind of transition you are going through and that you need to accept rather than an actual death.

  23. I dream of a girl that I didn’t know but I knew she was deceased from the feel of it death was all around me in the entire dream I asked her how is it she then replied don’t be afraid it’s not like you think and I really felt it …. threw her words that it’s not so bad….it felt so real…I see things before they happen in my dreams…

  24. I dreamed of 3 people I know we’re dead but one I was very close with I kept apologizing for not being there when he died because I was in the army he kept saying it was ok and that he was good. We walked around with our arms around each other and smoked a black and mild.

    • Your dream is a manifestation of your relationships with the people from your past. It is possible that something in your life caused this dream to appear. Walking around together could be a sign of the strength of your relationship. Honor the memories of those from your past by sharing your positive energy with the world.

  25. I dreamed my husband whom is dead was coming home. I was so excited to introduce my coworkers to him. Well as usual he takes forever to come. He finally came we went to go pick up a little girl not sure if it was my daughter or my granddaughter from the day care. He gave me a beautiful kiss (long). Then he said he was concern about one of the cars not working in reality its his youngest son car that has not working in a while.

    • This dream is a manifestation of your emotional relationship with your late husband. Something in your life may have caused this dream to manifest. The presence of your daughter and granddaughter may be an indication of your emotional relationships with them as well. Honor the memory of your husband by sharing your positive energy with the world.

  26. I dreamed my deceased younger brother came to my door and I told him to come in. He then started coming to hug me and I said “No!”. He opened his arms to embrace and kiss me while saying “Come on now”. I yelled no 3 more times and the 4th time I yelled no and shook myself awake. We were close when he was alive but I felt the kiss in the dream, was him coming to get me. This scares me because I am having surgery Tuesday March 3.

    • Your dream seems to be a reflection of various aspects of your life. Your reaction to your last brother may be a manifestation of your concerns regarding your surgery. It is common to have fears before major medical procedures, so you may find that your waking fears are impacting your dreams. Calm yourself, if possible, by taking this time for introspection.

  27. Before dead of my father and Brother I used to dream normal horror and etc etc but never remember what was my dream. After death of my father and brother. They both come to my dream meeting with some accidents and I rush toward hospital etc etc some that is not good I see in my dream and now I remember what I Shaw in my dream.

    • The dreams seem to be created from the trauma you feel about losing your loved ones. The accident and the rushing to the hospital just show all of the grief and trauma you continue to feel surrounding their death, which is an entirely natural feeling to go through after losing people you love.

  28. I’ve had a recurring dream where my husband who passed away comes back and says he was hiding from me. He needed a break from his life. And very detached from me. It’s the total opposite of what our life was. Total soulmates . Makes me so confused

    • This dream is a reflection of concerns or worries that you have, not a manifestation of his feelings toward you. It is clear that the two of you cared deeply for each other during your life. Allow the negative aspects of this dream to fade. Honor his memory by sharing your kindness and compassion at all times.

  29. My brother died a month ago. A couple days ago I had a dream of him. In my dream, he appeared younger than when he died. It was a dark room, almost like a small hotel room. There was a bed between us, it seem like he was unpacking. I immediately knew he was dead, in my dream. He looked at my, and I ran up to him and hugged him for a while. I told him how much I miss him. End of dream. When he died, I did see him the day before. But when he died, I was not able to make it there before he died.

    • The dream occurred because you miss him so much and wish that you could hug him one last time. It is always difficult when you lose a loved one, but it is especially hard if you weren’t able to say a final good-bye. This dream was your subconscious mind’s way of giving you one final chance to say your good-byes and get closure.
