Most women have gone through the experience of being with a guy who says that he doesn’t like to put a label on things. While he may treat you like his girlfriend, he’ll be hesitate to call you that. You go on dates, hang out together, even have intimate time with one another.
Everything seems like it’s all coming up roses, but when it gets down to it, you don’t know what to call him. Is he your boyfriend? Just a friend? More than a friend? When a guy says that he doesn’t like labels, it usually doesn’t bode well for the relationship.
1. He doesn’t want things to change
When a guy says he doesn’t like labels, it might be because he’s worried that things are going to change between you. After all, if you’re not calling what you have a relationship, then in his mind, there isn’t the same kind of baggage that comes with most relationships. He might be afraid that if he starts calling you his girlfriend, you’re going to demand more out of him. Try to reassure him that nothing has to change except for what you call one another – especially if you’re already doing most boyfriend-girlfriend behaviors in the first place.
2. He’s not into commitment
Unfortunately, a lot of guys who aren’t into commitment are going to say that they’re not really into labels. This makes it easier to shrug off any real commitment when it comes to the relationship. In other words, he wants all of the perks of having a relationship without having to commit to the other person. If he can’t be committed to you, then you might want to find someone who can. Don’t invest yourself in someone who doesn’t want to invest in you.
3. You’re both on different pages
Sometimes, when a guy says that he’s not into labels, it’s might be a sign that you two haven’t communicated your expectations well enough. If he thought that this was just going to be a causal relationship without any commitment, he might be surprised to find out that you’re eager to pin him down. Make sure that you both know what you want out of a relationship before moving forward. If you can’t get each other what you need, then you’ll be better off finding people who can.
4. He’s dating around
A guy who isn’t into labels usually isn’t into labels for a reason. Sometimes, that reason may just be that he’s dating other women. If you went into a relationship without an understanding that you were exclusive to one another, then he may not see anything wrong with dating multiple women at a time. You want to make sure that you’re both aware of what the other person wants to needs out of a relationship. If you’re looking for a boyfriend, and he’s looking for a sixth girlfriend, you might not be compatible.
5. He’s not sure if you’re the one
If a guy is avoiding calling you his girlfriend, it might just be that he’s not really sure if he wants you to be. No one really wants to imagine that their partner is stalling and trying to figure out if they’re the right person for them, but this is a possibility. Avoiding labels could be his way to getting around becoming official, because he doesn’t know if he really wants to be with you. It may be time to sit down and have a serious talk with him about where he wants this relationship to go.
6. He’s not over his ex
Getting into a new relationship after an intense or serious relationship before it can cause all kinds of problems in the new relationship. If a guy is avoiding calling you his girlfriend, it might be because he’s still holding out hope that his ex will call him up out of blue and want to get back together. By avoiding labels, he’s keeping himself open for that possibility. He needs space to work out his feelings, and you deserve someone who’s ready to move on from past relationships and start something new.
7. He’s not ready to stop being single
For a lot of guys, being single is a lot of fun. He can go out, meet girls, hangout with his friends, and not have to worry about a girlfriend back home. If he’s not into using labels, but still into using you, it might be a sign that he’s just not ready to give up being single. If you’re not ready either, enjoy it! But if you’re looking for something with a little more substance, it’s time to ditch him and let him party himself out.
When a guy is looking to avoid having labels, it’s usually due to him not being ready to make a full commitment to another person. He wants all of the perks of having you as a girlfriend, without actually having to call you his girlfriend. It might be best to sit down and talk it out with your partner if he’s avoiding using labels. Either you both want the same thing and you can work it out, or you want to go in two different directions.
